ARVAC's Governance Pages (www.governancepages.org.uk )  is now 3 years old. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund to draw on the various studies into governance and small organisations that took place at the turn of the century and to present the findings as straightforward information to those on the management committees of small voluntary organisations.  The aim was to present complex information in a clear and accessible way in response to a need for those governing small organisations to have equal access to governance resources as those governing larger organisations.
~
To this end Governance Pages answers over 100 common questions, provides dozens of sample documents that can be downloaded and customised, as well as concise guides on topics from User Involvement to Recruitment.  We intend to continue to build on this legacy and add further information and sample documents.  We hope to launch some new areas of work in the near future, including a new section on governance stories - first hand accounts from committee members - and a new section on develop that will look at governance standards and options for development.
~
You are cordially invited to join us at the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund to celebrate this achievement, hear from invited speakers about the impact of new legislation on small organisations and network with peers who share your interest in governance and small organisations.
~
Keynote Speaker:  James SInclair Taylor - Russell-Cooke
+ speakers from Arvac, Charity Trustee Networks and Governance Pages
+ a chance to network with others interested in the governance of small organisations

ARVAC

ARVAC, the Association for Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector, is a membership organisation which, since its establishment in 1978, has acted as a resource for people interested in research on or by community sector organisations.  We believe that voluntary and community organisations play a vital role in creating and sustaining healthy communities and that research plays an essential role in increasing the effectiveness of those organisations involved in voluntary and community action.

As well as Governance Pages, ARVAC has run a series of conferences and seminars and produces occasional publications.  We disseminate information through a quarterly on-line Bulletin; have developed a database of community research; and are currently redesigning our website to enable members to exchange information, experience and observations through a number of discussion forums.

PRESS RELEASE

9th June 2009

Governance clear and open - lessons from the community!

The community sector may have some lessons to share with national institutions on encouraging access to principles of sound governance.  The Association for Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector (ARVAC) is celebrating the completion of its three year Big Lottery Fund-funded project to meet the need for an on-line resource to enable even small community organisations to have open access to the kinds of reliable governance resources available to larger organisations.

ARVAC's Governance Pages (www.governancepages.org.uk ) are now 3 years old. The Big Lottery Fund project brought together the findings of a wide range of recent studies on governance for small organisations.  These have been used to produce straightforward information for those on the management committees of small voluntary organisations.  Over three years hundreds of community-based users of the pages helped add to and refine the Governance Pages.

The Governance Pages answers over 100 common questions, provides dozens of sample documents that can be downloaded and customised, as well as concise guides on topics from User Involvement to Recruitment.  We intend to continue to build on this legacy by adding further information and sample documents.  We are planning new areas of work in the near future, including a new section on governance stories - first hand accounts from committee members - and on governance standards.

On 9th June 2009 the Association for Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector (ARVAC) will host a celebratory reception at the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, chaired by Fiona Poland, ARVAC Chair, to celebrate this achievement, hear from invited speakers about the impact of new legislation on small organisations, and find out more about what the Governance Pages offer for those with an interest in governance and small organisations.

-           James Sinclair Taylor (Partner, Russell-Cooke Partnership, law firm specialising in charity) is the keynote speaker on what the new legislation means for running community groups,

-           Kevin Nunan (ARVAC/ Governance Pages Editor)  Introducing the Governance Pages

-           Karen Heenan, (Chief Executive, Charity Trustee Networks) will discuss how this these can help the work of community trustees.

This free event (but bookings needed ) will be held at the The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, County Hall, Westminster Bridge Road, London, from 3.00 to 5.00pm, with a drinks reception. Further information and details of how to book are available at:
